Many perennials can be planted in the fall in the more temperate zones as mother nature does. Some may not bloom the first year. Number 1 rule: PATIENCE !!!!!

"We live outside of Atlanta in a very rural area....My grandparents were very poor people, but her house always had zinnias stuck in mason jars in every room. It was not uncommon for farmers to prepare large acreage for their crops and leave space where their wives would plant zinnias and marigolds at the end of the plots. As you drove the back roads of Georgia, you would see miles and miles of zinnias lining cornfields and cotton fields. I planted a huge border and they came up just as beautiflly as I remembered. One day, while I was out in the garden cutting flowers for my house, I decided to put a bouquet together and send it over to this lady we had seen coming and going. The next day this lady came over and introduced herself. (She) told me she had never received flowers from anyone in all her life and that she had been touched beyond words...that it had been years, since she was a little girl living in the country that she had seen flowers like these....Not only did we touch someone's heart with the zinnias, but we have now gotten to be very close friends with this lady and her husband (an invalid). I always tell my daughter that our flower bed turned out to be priceless! A customer of mine has wrestled an urban lot in Ohio from the city and started a community garden. One day a young child who had just moved in across the street came over to see what was going on.
